Determination of Fractal Dimensions of Images: Analysis of Laser Confocal Scanning Microscope Images Containing Phantom Surface Artifacts.

Abstract

Techniques for quantitative fractal analysis of images containing extensive localized noisy regions are described. The reliability of the techniques is demonstrated by application to a number of artificially contaminated mathematical fractal constructions, and the usefulness of the techniques is demonstrated by the presentation of results for five laser confocal scanning microscope images of fracture surfaces containing extensive phantom surface artifacts.
