Iron Deprivation Treatment of Breast Cancer: Pre-Clinical Studies.

Abstract

Progress has been made toward the first four of the five tasks listed in the statement of work. The most interesting results have come in pursuit in tasks one and two. We have discovered (and published) the fact that the breast cancer cell lines SK-BR-3 and MDA-MB-231 vary with respect to their sensitivity to iron deprivation treatment. Sensitivity to monoclonal anti-transferrin receptor antibodies appears to be correlated with the relative degree of receptor down-modulation seen. In addition, the degree to which the same monoclonal antibodies shift the deferoxamine dose-response curve to the left appears to be correlated with tumor growth rate. These findings indicate that breast tumors do respond to iron deprivation treatment in vitro and thus strengthen the rationale for proceeding on with the in vivo experiments as planned.
