Practical Guidelines for Moisture Diffusion Measurements in Composites.

Abstract

Composite powder samples and thin sheet laminates were investigated for their moisture absorption behavior. Knowledge of the maximum moisture equilibrium concentrations in composites as a function of the surrounding relative humidity is necessary for determining their moisture diffusion coefficients. While thin sheet laminates gave the same solubility values as thick laminates, powder samples of the same laminates gave about 25 percent higher values. These apparently higher solubilites in composite powder samples were attributed to the larger surface area per unit mass. Based on these findings, procedural guidelines were proposed for increasing the efficiency in determining the diffusion coefficients in composite materials.
