The Standard Automated Mass Properties (STAMP) Testing and Calibration Procedures.

Abstract

This document describes an automated procedure to measure the mass, center of gravity, and principal moments of inertia of objects weighing up to 100 pounds. The procedure uses three-sided, orthogonal support boxes - to secure the test objects during testing and to provide a method for relating test object features to a known coordinate system, a digital balance and moment table - to determine the mass and center of gravity, a torsional pendulum - to determine the moments of inertia, a three-dimensional digitizer - to specify various axes systems and location of discrete landmarks, and a computer - for data acquisition and analysis. The procedure consists of measuring the mass properties of the test object secured within a support fixture and then subtracting the contribution of the support fixture, resulting in the mass properties of the test object alone. The inertial properties of the test object are then referenced to the center of mass of the test object through the location of reference points on the test object which form a test object based coordinate axis system.
