China's Transition into the 21st Century: U. S. and PRC Perspectives.

Abstract

The two essays contained in this volume are useful in that they help us look at China from two different but fresh viewpoints. While Dr. Shambaugh contends that China is, despite an impressive economic surge in the past decade, a weak and divided country, Colonel Wang holds that the PLA is united, committed, and determined to modernize. With the fall of the Soviet Union, China has, indeed, inherited the mantle of the world's most important--and most potent --Marxist-Leninist state. While military confrontation between the United States and China may be avoidable, political and economic competition is likely to continue.
