Preflight Characterization of SAMMES II Specimens.

Abstract

The preflight characterization of flight specimens for the Space Active Modular Materials Experiment (SAMMES) II mission has been completed by The Aerospace Corporation and the Illinois Institute of Technology Research Institute (IITRI). The specimens consisted of calorimeter substrates coated with the following IITRI paints: Z-93P, S13GP/LO-1, YB-71, and MH21S/LO. Four samples were prepared, each coated with a different paint. One or more of each type of sample were subjected to all measurements. These measurements included mass, density, thickness, solar absorptance, normal emittance, hemispherical emittance, and traceability. Comparisons were made between measurements done at IITRI, Aerospace, and McDonnell Douglas Astronautics for both solar absorptance and thermal emittance.
