Real-Time 3D Ultrasound for Physiological Monitoring 22258.
Abstract
This report documents the second year of a 4-year project to develop field prototype 3-D ultrasonic medical imaging systems. During the reporting period, progress was made on both 2-D array transducers and on sequential B-scan systems. The major result was development and successful field test in Bosnia and Germany of a sequential B-scan 3-D ultrasound telemedicine system prototype called MUSTPAC-1 (Medical UltraSound, Three-dimensional and Portable, with Advanced Communications). MUSTPAC-1 uses conventional ultrasound probes, operating at 3.5-5 MHz, to obtain high resolution images at relatively low speed (15 seconds per 3-D scan). In addition, feasibility studies were performed regarding the use of 2-D transducer arrays, with the goal of achieving real time image acquisition rates.
