Evaluation of Mine Threat

Abstract

This report describes methods for incorporating ship count distributions into the calculation of both the mine threat to target vessels and the number of expected casualties, prior to and after the execution of mine countermeasures (MCM) operations. The theory is developed for the scenarios of a target transiting along and constrained to a channel, and a target patrolling within an area. Detailed mathematical descriptions are provided of the methods developed to evaluate the mine threat. A comparison is made between the results predicted by the proposed algorithms and those produced by a Monte Carlo simulation. Algorithmic descriptions are given suitable for computer implementation.
