An Annotated Bibliography of Latin American Military Journals.

Abstract

Like military journals in most other parts of the world, those of Latin America serve both as a means for disseminating knowledge of professional military subjects and as "house organs". These objectives are pursued sometimes by a specialization of different journals along one or the other of these two lines and sometimes by a diversification of the contents of individual journals to cover both interests. Both types of journals and materials contribute to an understanding of the Latin American military. The professional articles--ranging from elementary or basic training material for recruits to highly technical papers--throw light on the professional interests, skill levels, and educational problems of different military establishments and their several services. Editorials and articles on national security problems and national and international military affairs contribute to the understanding of internal political-military problems and of relations with other states. Feld's use of United States service journals to study military self-images in the United States suggests one way in which such materials, and the present bibliography, might be employed in studies of the Latin American military.
