Abstract

The primary objective of this program was to further the research goals of AFOSR in plasma physics. MRC's role in this program was to collaborate with other AFOSR-sponsored researchers in the development and application of state-of-the-art computational methods to critical research problems. The principal mechanism for this collaboration was the joint research group. The objectives of this group includes not only the performance of superior research, but also the advancement of computational research methods by focusing the combined resources and capabilities of the entire community. The joint research group was established several years ago. Charter members include five universities (Texas Tech, Univ of Michigan, UCLA, MIT, and King's College) in addition to MRC. The research initially focused on problems such as plasma guns and microwave tube research. MRC provided the other participants with codes and related materials and, as their expertise grew, participated with them in their research and analyses and in the formulation of future research and modeling requirements. At present the group has expanded to include 17 universities and 6 government agencies. The scope of research has also expanded to include new topics, including novel beam emission sources and pulsed-power switches.
