Pressure Vessel Burst Test Study.

Abstract

Pressure vessels are used extensively in both ground and spacecraft applications. Explosive failures of vessels are rare due to precautions normally taken including adherence to consensus design, fabrication and test codes and standards. Yet pressure vessels do occasionally fail, releasing significant energy and possible hazardous commodities into the surroundings. In addition, blast waves and high velocity fragments can result from a failure and damage structures or cause injuries. This report describes pneumatic burst testing performed to augment an inadequate pressure vessel burst database. The program studied the blast wave and fragmentation of bursting gas filled pressure vessels. This study permits a greater understanding of the differences between well documented high explosive detonations and pressure vessel bursts.
