Impacts of Coal Surface Mining on 25 Migratory Bird Species of High Federal Interest,

Abstract

Potential impacts of coal surface mining on 25 migratory bird species of high Federal interest are examined. Information presented is the result of literature searches on migratory bird species and coal surface mining operations. Each species account includes a discussion on distribution, life history, habitat requirements, population status, effects of habitat changes and human disturbance, and management techniques. Information on potential impacts and recommendations for mitigation measures is included, along with general suggestions for the reclamation of wildlife habitat. This document is designed for use by biologists in conducting a preliminary assessment of the potential impacts of a particular coal surface mining project on selected species of migratory birds of high Federal interest present in the area during some part of the year.
