Transmission Capacity Metric for SPF Routing in ISO 10589.

Abstract

The ISO 10589 IS-IS protocol relies on the SPF algorithm to route traffic to destinations. By default, metric values associated with the capacity of the circuits are understood by every IS in a domain and used in performing the default path cost calculations. This report shows that such approach will normally lead to sub-optimal routing. Two indicators are developed to assess the routing bias introduced by various throughput based routing metric functions. Numerical results are presented for selected suites of 2-hop and 3-hop topologies, composed of HF, UHF and/or SHF radio subnetworks.
