Abstract

The purpose of this study is to provide a perspective on key issues in methadone maintenance treatment for opiod dependence and its role in the containment of HIV transmission. The key issue addressed is the following: Is methadone maintenance treatment effective in reducing the rates of HIV seropositivity? The study describes and analyzes the development of methadone maintenance as a treatment modality for opiod dependence and reviews the available observational research evidence on the effectiveness of methadone maintenance treatment, the basic facts about HIV and AIDS, and the epidemiology of HIV infection among injecting drug users.
