Individual and Family Readiness for Separation and Deployment: Results from the 1992 DoD Surveys of Officers and Enlisted Personnel and Military Spouses.
Abstract
To better understand and plan for the needs of a changing military force, the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) conducted the 1992 Surveys of Officers and Enlisted Personnel and Their Spouses. The objective of this report was to analyze issues related to individual and unit readiness for deployment, recall, and alert. Central questions that were addressed are whether some service members are more likely than others to experience difficulty in responding quickly to recalls, alerts, or changes in work schedule, and whether some members worry more than others about their families while they are away on assignment. This report presents findings that can guide policies designed to reduce readiness barriers that Service members may experience. Highlights of the report are as follows: (a) a higher proportion of dual-military families encounter difficulties responding to short-notice separations or deployments; (b) female service members, younger personnel, and individuals with dependents require more support as they cope with short-notice job demands and deployments; (c) Navy personnel have more difficulty responding to quick alerts than members of other services, (d) older, more experience personnel respond to quick alert/deployments with fewer problems and concerns than do younger, less experienced service members, and (e) career satisfaction is positively related to ability to respond to demands of military life.
