Backscatter and Transmission of Aerosol at UV through Middle IR Wavelengths.

Abstract

Simultaneous direct measurements of volume extinction, sigma(e), and backscatter coefficient, sigma(b), for obscuring aerosol of carbon graphite flakes have been carried out in the laboratory at four wavelengths 1064, 532, 355 and 266 nm. Despite the low backscattered signal, reasonably good agreement is obtained between the experimental values for sigma(e)/sigma(b) and prediction. Background aerosol particle size, mass and volatility measurements of the ambient natural aerosol at the Mace Head atmospheric field research station near Cama, Co. Galway (53 deg 19'N, 9 deg 54'W) on the west coast of Ireland are presented over the period December 1993- August 1994. The total biological aerosol (pollen and spore) concentration ranging in value from zero up to 700 per m3, at Mace Head is measured using a Burkard sampler for the period from March 1993 through June 1994. Individual taxa (species) concentrations are also presented. Measurements (relative) of pollen and spore species in units of grains per area, using an array of passive samplers (Trauber traps) for seven sites in the west of Ireland are also obtained, covering the period from November 1992 through June 1994.
