Coupling of Gaussian Incident Beam Energy into Planar Guided Wave Structures.

Abstract

A two dimensional, finite difference, coupled mode method is applied to calculate endwise coupling of Gaussian beams into planar waveguides. Polarization with the electric or magnetic vector parallel to the waveguide boundaries is considered. Numerical results indicate that, for the model waveguide considered, most of the Gaussian energy is coupled into the waveguide. For polarization with the magnetic vector parallel to the waveguide boundary, the incident beam couples with evanescent surface modes and propagating modes.
