Limited Handling Qualities Evaluation of Augmented Longitudinal Flight Control Systems Designed with State-Space Optimization Techniques (HAVE INFINITY).

Abstract

This technical report presents the results of a limited handling qualities evaluation of augmented longitudinal flight control systems designed with state-space optimization techniques. The objective of the test was to evaluate the handling qualities of four longitudinal flight control systems during the approach and landing phase of flight. Three of the flight control systems used state-space design techniques and the fourth used classical design techniques. The four flight control systems were evaluated using the Variable Stability Simulator II (VSS II) , which was a highly modified Learjet Model 25. Testing was requested by Wright Laboratory, Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, and was conducted under the authority of the Commandant, USAF Test Pilot School.
