Natural Exposure of Selected Graphite/Epoxy Composite Material Systems.

Abstract

A study was made on selected graphite/epoxy composite materials exposed at different geographical locations. The Panama exposure site was more detrimental to reduced static strength than the Warminster, PA site. Coating was found to negate irreversible ultraviolet plus moisture degradation. Reversible elevated temperature moisture degradation was approximately 25% for matrix dominated properties. The T300/5208 system offered the best resistance to degradation from natural exposure. The use of a 6 ply O deg +/- 45 deg panel loaded in sustained flexure was found to enhance scatter.
