Analysis of LCTA Methods for Inventory and Monitoring Birds and Small Mammals on Army Lands in the Southwestern United States.

Abstract

The U.S. Army's Land Condition Trend Analysis (LCTA) Program was established to inventory and monitor ecological systems on Army lands using standard methods. Information obtained using LCTA can help installation resource managers meet multiple-use demands. Although LCTA data have been collected on various installations and analysis is underway. This study uses power analysis to evaluate bird and small mammal inventory and monitoring protocols in Army lands in the southwestern United States. Specifically, the study addresses field sampling techniques, sampling design, and analytical approaches and uses four commonly used diversity indices for detecting community differences.
