Noise Reduction Methods for Detecting Impulses in Seismic Data.

Abstract

The problem of reducing background noise in seismic listening devices is of great importance to urban search and rescue teams using the Corps of Engineers STOLS system (System to Locate Survivors). Both single-channel and two-channel noise cancellation methods are compared with bandpass filtering methods. The results from both simulated data and field data are used to indicate the strengths and weaknesses of each method. Potential hardware implementations are presented.
