Cleanout and Decontamination of a Mustard Agent Ton Container.

Abstract

The U.S. Army's Chemical Stockpile Disposal Program established the Alternative Technology Program to develop an alternative (chemical neutralization methods) to destroy the bulk blister agent HD (mustard) due to public concerns about the possible effects of incinerator emissions. ERDEC and the office of the Product Manager for Alternative Technologies and Approaches is working to develop the data required to assess whether an alternative technology should be tested in a pilot-scale facility. One of the critical aspects of the program is the successful decontamination of ton containers (TCs), which are used for bulk storage of the agent.
