Probabilistic Rotor Design System (PRDS). Phase 2.

Abstract

The USAF Probabilistic Rotor Design System (PRDS) contract was designed to develop, validate and demonstrate a probabilistic alternative to existing deterministic design philosophy. This report documents Phase II effort: Method Development. It begins with an introduction to the concept of designing probabilistically against failure and a comparison of three standard approaches to estimating failure probability. Following this, the philosophy is laid out for PDAS (PDAS - Probabilistic Design Analysis System), a software package which facilitates application to the design process of probabilistic algorithms and optimization tools. A general strategy is outlined for application of probabilistics with three specific examples provided to demonstrate the integration of statistically describable variability into design analyses. Specific proposals are then made for setting part lives using probabilistics. The report concludes with a detailed summary of the PDAS Template Language and its application to managing response surface analyses.
