Strategic/Tactical Optical Disk System S/TODS Jukebox. Volume 1.

Abstract

Rewritable optical disk technology affords the promise of larger storage capacity storage for many military applications. The original objective was to develop and deliver two advanced development model (ADM) optical disk storage systems for scientific and technical (S&T) reconnaissance aircraft and ground-based intelligence collection stations. The first ADM consisted of a single disk device capable of performing high-speed write, read and erase operations on a 14-inch diameter, rewritable optical disk. Each optical disk stores 12 gigabytes of user data. Key technical developments included the optical head assembly, optical disk media and high speed electronics design. The second ADM consisted of a fully automated optical disk jukebox storing 120 gigabytes. Key technical features include rugged, modular design for quick deployment set-up and tear-down, dual picker robotics for faster cycle time and an easily interchangeable disk cache for rapid data access in very large capacity applications. Both ADMS were designed, built and tested to comply with anticipated airborne and tactical environments.
