Literature Review: Impact Toughness of Bainite vs. Martensite.

Abstract

A review of the literature is conducted with regard to the mechanical properties of bainite vs. martensite. Tempered martensite is found to have generally superior mechanical properties for lower (less than .5%) carbon content steels, but two specific bainitic heat treatments are described which may yield optimum properties.
