Increasing Access to Modern Multidisciplinary Breast Cancer Care

Abstract

The goal of our project 'Increasing Access to Modern Multidisciplinary Breast Cancer Care' is to increase the utilization of currently available technologies for the screening, diagnosis, and treatment of breast carcinoma, particularly among the medically underserved. This goal is addressed through 2 projects providing education to health care consumers and providers, 3 projects which employ direct interventions to increase the utilization of available technologies and treatments, 2 projects addressing cost-effectiveness of new technologies, and a core facilities upgrade. Education projects include breast health education by peer educators in linguistically isolated minorities, and a small group educational course for nurses providing primary care to the underserved which employs patient surrogates. The direct interventions include a randomized trial of same day mammography to increase screening compliance, a randomized trial of a dietary education intervention in Hispanic women, and an evaluation of modern computer technology in a network breast cancer conference as a way to increase clinical trial accrual. The cost-effectiveness of stereotactic breast biopsy and outpatient bone marrow transplantation are evaluated. The specific aims and work to date for each of these projects are presented in this year 1 report.
