Diagnostics of Gun Barrel Propellants.

Abstract

A preliminary investigation of the applicability of the spontaneous Raman diagnostic technique to the determination of the temperature of the propellant gases in the vicinity of the muzzle of a 2Omm gun has been completed. It is concluded that with the proper care, and the correct laser excitation wavelength, flow field diagnostics based on laser light scattering can provide the information desired. Some typical temperature measurements were obtained and are discussed in this report. Methods of improving the accuracy of test data are also described.
