Site Specific Reactions of B and Si Based Compounds in Carbon.

Abstract

This report summarizes the progress made during three years of an AFOSR sponsored program directed towards understanding the atomic details of oxidation resistance in carbon based composites. The primary tools are scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, high resolution energy loss spectroscopy, and conventional surface analysis. The results of this program to date can be separated into three subfields; oxidative reactions on carbon: a model study; instrument design for in situ deposition studies; initial stages of SiOx deposition.
