A Critical Analysis of Ground/Based Air Defense During Joint Expeditionary Operations.

Abstract

This study investigates the role and feasibility of ground-based air defense during joint expeditionary operations. it covers the roles and missions that ground-based air defense will fulfill during the initial thirty-day period of a lodgement operation, which is the most critical and vulnerable of times for the expeditionary forces. This includes the current threats from the air that a joint expeditionary force faces, the doctrine used to employ them, and their capabilities and limitations. in addition this study includes the types and amount of groundbased air defense that each of the services brings into the area of operations in the first thirty days of the operation. This thesis analyzes the available United States armed forces assets to protect those high-value areas and assets with the ground-based air defense assets which are brought into the theater within the first thirty days.
