USIGS Technical Architecture (UTA)
Abstract
The purpose of this document is to define the United States Imagery and Geospatial information System (USIGS) Technical Architecture (UTA). USIGS is the single, integrated system which is evolving from multiple systems to support the Imagery and Geospatial Community (IGC) in the US Government's acquisition and production of imagery, imagery intelligence, and geospatial information. The USIGS has a common information management framework that enables sharing of data, services, and resources among IGC members and their consumers UAF97. A technical architecture is a minimal set of rules governing the arrangement, interaction, and interdependence of the parts or elements whose purpose is to ensure that a conformant system satisfies a specified set of requirements. The technical architecture identifies the services, interfaces, standards, and their relationships. It provides the technical guidelines for implementation of systems upon which engineering specifications are based, common building blocks are built, and product lines are developed C4ISR96. This document has these primary functions: (1) It presents a technical reference model that details geospatial and imagery services and emphasizes the distributed object computing approach being taken by USIGS; (2) it profiles the Department of Defense (DoD) Joint Technical Architecture (JTA) for the geospatial and imagery domain represented by the USIGS Community; and (3) it provides the rules and guidelines for further development and implementation. Based on these functions, the document is important from a variety of different perspectives. It establishes the set of principles (in terms of standards, conventions, guidelines, data formats, etc.) applicable to new and migration system development, and application component development, across the USIGS community.
