Ethnicity, Soybean Consumption, and Mammographic Densities.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine whether mammographic density patterns differ by ethnic background and to explore the possible association of a soy rich diet with mammographic density patterns. So far, 486 women have been recruited at mammography clinics in Honolulu and 253 women have completed the questionnaires. Urine samples for isoflavone analysis have been collected from 102 women. Mammographic density assessment has been performed for 39 women. Preliminary results on mammographic density suggest that the area of dense tissue in the breast may be smaller in Asian than in Caucasian women. However, because of their relatively smaller breast size, the percent of the breast occupied by dense tissue in Asian women may be equal to or higher than in Caucasian women. We found a high correlation between urinary isoflavone measurements and soy protein and isoflavone intake as estimated from the self-administered questionnaire. In conclusion, recruitment for this study is will be completed shortly. The successful training in mammographic density assessment will allow us to read all mammograms as soon as the upgraded X-ray scanner is installed. The collection and analysis of urine samples has been completed. Statistical analysis on available data is continuing.
