An Intervention Study on Screening for Breast Cancer Among Single African-American Women Aged 65 and Older.
Abstract
This is a community-based intervention study that aims to develop and evaluate an intervention program on breast screening according to the characteristics of older single African-American women. Study subjects are single African-American women ages 65 and older living in the public housing complexes in Nashville. The complexes are randomly assigned to the intervention or control group. As of August 31, 1997, we have conducted pre-intervention interviews with 232 recruited women. The lay health educators have delivered the intervention to 123 women in the intervention group to improve their breast screening behavior and emotional adjustment skills. Educational materials were mailed to 241 significant others of the women in the intervention group. The significant others were advised to help the women by providing health information, advising a breast screening, increasing emotional support, and giving other needed help. More interviews and intervention deliveries are under way. Through the collective efforts, this study has progressed very well in terms of the statement of work, especially considering that the research team was fully staffed only several months ago. Once interviews at pre-intervention are completed, data will be analyzed to examine the barriers to breast screening and emotional problems among the older single African American women.
