Needs Assessment for Pregnancy and Sexually Transmitted Disease Prevention Among Military Women.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to understand the needs of deployed and deployable military women, with respect to pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease prevention. The studies proposed to examine both supply-side (health service providers) and demand-side (women's compliance) issues using a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods. The research was to take place at eight sites in the southern U.S., Honduras, and Panama and to include samples of Air Force, Army, and Navy women in the Military Reserve and National Guard, on Active Duty in the Continental United States, and those deployed overseas. The needs assessment consisted of two phases: (1) a facility analysis and an ethnographic study, and (2) a large-sample survey. The first year of the project was spent submitting the Phase 1 protocol for the necessary approvals, making requested revisions to the protocol and the sample of military bases, and resubmitting the protocol. The Department of the Army has asked to negotiate a termination of the contract because of the investigators' inability to obtain these approvals. These negotiations are currently in progress and all activities in the scope of work have been stopped.
