Reaching Rural Mammographers for Quality Improvement.

Abstract

The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, the University of Washington, and the Washington State Department of Health are collaborating to develop and implement a mammography quality improvement program (MQIP), in order to demonstrate its feasibility and effectiveness for dissemination. The MQIP emphasizes continuous quality improvement (CQI) in film interpretation, within the context of a comprehensive program designed to meet the requirements of the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) of 1994. During the first year of fending, project investigators and staff focused on the development of procedures and materials necessary to recruit and conduct the CQI. Recruitment has begun for this part of the study. Additionally, planning and preparations have gone into developing training sessions for tumor registrars and mammography technologists. The Mammography Tumor Registry (MTR) database which will support the MQIP has also undergone structural changes to allow for the addition of MQIP facilities that do not use computerized systems. The database itself has also been modified to make the process of adding and validating data from MQIP facilities and report generation more efficient.
