Accomplishments and Opportunities Report Information Integration for Concurrent Engineering.

Abstract

This document provides an overview and describes the results of the Information Integration for Concurrent Engineering (IICE) project, a four-year program sponsored by the Armstrong Laboratory Logistics Research Division. This program provides the foundations, methods, and tools to effectively implement and evolve toward an information-integraed concurrent engineering environment. In the context of information integration, "information systems' are systems which include both automated and non-automated components responsible for capturing, managing, and controlling IICE information resources. The IICE program investigated information integration concepts supporting this broad definition through eight technical thrusts: Integrated Systems Theory, Three-Schema Architecture, Experimental Tools, Ontology, Frameworks, Methods Engineering, Applications, and Technology Transfer thrusts. In this report, each of these thrusts are discussed in detail, beginning with the goals and objectives of the thrust, the relationship of the thrust to other IICE thrusts, and a summary of the significant accomplishments achieved in the thrust This introduction is then followed by a detailed discussion of the philosophy surrounding each thrust and the technical results derived from each.
