The Investigation of the Influence of Parameter (M Infinity)/(Square Root of Re) on the Aerodynamic Characteristics of a Body of Revolution with the Generatrix Break at Hypersonic Velocities
Abstract
This report contains the results of testing a body of revolution featuring the contour generatrix break in the wind tunnel T-121 of TsAGI. The test model is a body of revolution having an ogive nose, a central cylindrical body and an aft conical 'skirt' with a generatrix angle of theta=6.5 deg. The tests of the aerodynamic characteristics of the model (balance tests) were performed using an external three-component strain-gage balance at zero sideslip angle and angles of attack ranging from -4 deg to 10 deg for flow conditions corresponding to Mach numbers M(infinity) is approx. 4.0, 5.0, 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, and 9.0. The Reynolds numbers, Re(x), based on the free-stream flow parameters and the reference linear dimension x=0.172 characterizing the distance from the model nose to the generatrix break point were varied in possible ranges at all Mach numbers being tested. Eventually, the Reynolds numbers, Re(x), were varied from Re(x) = 0.9X10(exp 6) (M(infinity) = 4.96) to Re(x) = 8.6X10(exp 6) (M(infinity) = 4.06) with the complex parameter M(infinity)/(square root of Re(x)) varying from 1.38X10(exp -3) to 8.15X10(exp -3). The tests of flow spectra over the model (optical tests) were carried out at M(infinity) = 4.0, 5.0, 6.0, 7.0, and 8.0, at zero sideslip angle and zero angle of attack and at Reynolds numbers, Re(x), varying from Re(x) = 0.9X10(exp 6) (M(infinity) = 4.96) to Re(x) = 8.2X10(exp 6) (M(infinity) = 4.06).
