An Investigation of Reproductive Health Outcomes and Potential Risk Factors in Air Force Women.

Abstract

Phase I of this two phase study focuses on longitudinal descriptive analyses of natality and pregnancy outcomes among Active Duty Air Force (ADAF) women from 1975 to 1994. Observed rates for normal reproductive outcomes and adverse pregnancy outcomes are being compared for the first time, across different demographic strata within the US Air Force. The primary source of data is the Air Force Medical Support Agency (AFMSA) Standard Inpatient Record and the Armstrong Laboratory Human Resources Directorate historical files. This annual report examines the natality experience (1975-1994). Age-specific rates for outcomes varied within the AF by calendar year, age, race, rank, command, geographic area, and occupation, with consideration of differences in marital status and parity. Comparisons between the Air Force experience and that of employed women in the USA show that the number of births/1,000 women appear slightly greater than that of the civilian population, indicating that active duty does not reduce the birthrate. As reviewed in the Appendix, the information developed in Phase I, is background for Phase II case- control studies which evaluate causal hypotheses regarding the possible effects of AF service among enlisted women and officers, on risks of preterm delivery, pregnancy induced hypertension, and spontaneous abortion.
