Signaling Activity and Prognostic Significance of Variant Forms of pl85HER-2/neu in Breast Cancer

Abstract

The overall purpose is to determine the significance of variant protein products of the HER-2/neu oncogene in signaling and prognosis in human breast cancer. The HER-2/neu oncogene is over expressed and predicts poor prognosis in human breast cancer. The extracellular domain (ECD) of the HER-2/neu encoded protein is shed from the surface of breast carcinoma cells and is elevated in sera from patients with metastatic breast cancer. We have recently identified a truncated p95HER-2/neu cytoplasmic kinase that may be the end left when the ECD is shed from cells.
