High Cathode Temperature Experiments on an MPD Thruster

Abstract

The first phase of the program was dedicated to improving the cathode heater to be mounted on the thruster, and to integrating the thruster with test equipment already available at CS. A more exhaustive description of this phase of the program was given in the review report number 1. The experimental activity of the second phase was performed in two steps: firstly the calibration of the gas feeding system was conducted, then the measurements of the electrical characteristics with cold cathode and with the cathode heated at about 2100K at the tip were taken. Argon, nitrogen, hydrogen and gas mixtures simulating hydrazine and ammonia were used as propellants.
