Model Studies of Current Collection by a Flush Mounted Disk Probe

Abstract

A simplified model of collection of charged particles by a flush mounted disk probe is presented. The model considers only collection of ions launched with a single fixed velocity normal to the collecting plane. It ignores collisions and space charge effects as well as the thermal distribution of the collected ions. The results of this model are compared with those of earlier, more detailed models, as well as with experimental results obtained from similar probes flown on rockets in the ionosphere.
