NRHP Evaluation of Ten Archaeological Sites and the Chapel of the Wings, US Army Aviation Center and Fort Rucker, Alabama.
Abstract
During March 1SS7, Brocidngton and Associates, Inc. conducted National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) evaluation often archaeological sites (1 DA267, 1DA268, 1DA276, 1DA277, 1DA278, 1DA279, 1DA2aO, 1DA281, 1DA282, and 1DA316) and the Chapel of the Wings on the US Army Aviation Center and Fort Rucker, Alabama. Nine of these sites were discovered during site form exercises led by archaeologists frm Troy State University; 1DA316 was discovered by USACE Mobile archaeologists. The Chapel of the Wings is a World War II era building with alter furnishings built by German prisoners of war. Site 1DA316, containing Weeeden Island and several earlier components, and the Chapel of the Wings are recommended eligible for the NRHP. Site 1DA3 6 produced a large pit containing Weeden island ceramics and a variety of ethnobotanical and osteological materials. The remaining nine sites, containing a variety of prehistoric components including Early Archaic, Late Archaic, Gulf Formational, Early Woodand, Late Woodland, and Mississippian, are recommended not eligible for the NRHP.
