Navigation Conditions at Saugus River Floodgate.
Abstract
Because of flooding that has occurred at the mouth of the Saugus and Pines River estuary about 10 miles north of Boston, MA, and because of the potential for additional flooding and costly damage, the U.S Army Engineer Division, New England, has developed a plan to reduce flood damage from the Standard Project Northeaster (SPN). The plan consists of construction of a revetment, seawalls, restored sand dunes, and the Saugus River floodgate structure. Although the design for the proposed floodgate was based on sound theoretical design practice and experience, navigation conditions through the navigation gate of the structure could be expected to be complex. Therefore, comprehensive numerical and physical model studies were considered necessary. Construction sequencing of the floodgate structure and navigation of vessels through each phase of construction for both ebb and flood tides were accomplished in the physical model, and are documented in this report.
