Defense Issues. Volume 13, Number 31. U.S. Must Plan Carefully for Strong Future Defense,

Abstract

Remarks by John J Hamre, deputy secretary of defense, at the Navy League Sea-Air-Space Exposition, Washington, March 31, 1998, and at the christening of the fast combat-support ship USS Bridge, San Diego, March 28, 1998. Americans may be focused on domestic problems, but the need continues for a strong national defense in the post-Cold War era -- and that defense must address both modernization and morale issues.
