Strategic Defense Initiative Program: Status of Airborne Optical Adjunct and Terminal Imaging Radar.
Abstract
This report is in response to your request for information on the status of the Strategic Defense Initiative Organization's technology validation experiments on the Airborne Optical Adjunct (AOA) and Terminal Imaging Radar (TIR). These experiments, being managed by the Army's Strategic Defense Command, are designed to demonstrate that technology is available to develop effective sensors for a terminal phase ballistic missile defense system. The Strategic Defense Initiative is the Department of Defense's (DOD's) program to determine the feasibility of developing a defense against nuclear ballistic missiles. The program envisions a layered defense system, that is, a system capable of destroying a ballistic missile during any phase of its flight--boost, post-boost, midcourse, or terminal.
