Divided They Stand: Managing Diversity in Belgium's Divided Society.

Abstract

An examination of the conflict between Flemings and Walloons in Belgium. This study seeks to uncover the sources of national unity in Belgium. The following factors stand out as having served to unify the Belgian people: (1) a common heritage; (2) the transition to a federal state; (3) a consociational system; and (4) the intractable debate over Brussels.
