Impact Testing of the JPATS Manikins.

Abstract

One Small and one Large Joint Primary Aircraft Training System (JPATS) manikin along with one Large Advanced Dynamic Anthropomorphic Manikin (ADAM) were exposed to a series of short-duration x, y, and z acceleration pulses on the Armstrong Laboratory Vertical Deceleration Tower and Horizontal Impulse Accelerator. Biodynamic response data from the JPATS manikins were collected and compared with the Large ADAM data as well as with Small ADAM and human subject data from previous tests conducted under identical conditions. The results demonstrated that the JPATS manikins were in general structurally sound, but had serious weaknesses in the neck bracket and knee stops, and some recurring problems in the instrumentation system. Although both JPATS manikins adequately generated and measured most biodynamic responses, the abnormally low force responses of the Small JPATS neck and the Large JPATS lumbar regions were inadequate compared to the other manikins. In addition, large variations in the lumbar and neck responses of both JPATS manikins and inadequate simulation of some x and y-axis human responses should be investigated.
