Report on the Evaluation Results of the Course "Mechanic Undercarriage Leopard 2"

Abstract

This report describes the background, the construction and application of a methodology to evaluate technical training. A literature search was executed to investigate, among other things, the characteristics of technical work and technical training, and problems related to the transfer of training. Based on the results a method to evaluate technical training was constructed. The methodology was tried out by evaluating the course for the mechanical engineers for the under carriage Leopard 2 battle tank given at one of the schools of the Royal Dutch Army. To collect data, questionnaires were constructed for trainees, (experienced) mechanics and their superiors, manuals and training materials were studied, and observations were done during training and at the workplace. The results showed that the training is an adequate preparation for the function of under carriage mechanic, although further improvement is still possible. Recommendations have been defined. The current study also led to further improvement of the evaluation methodology.
