Repletion of Zinc and Iron Deficiencies Improves Cognition of Premenopausal Women.
Abstract
Hypothesis: repletion of mild zinc (Zn) and iron (Fe) deficiencies will improve cognition of premenopausal women. Design: double-blind stratified randomized controlled treatment (with cross-over) trial. Subjects (ss): 60 Zn-Fe deficient (D) and 20 normal (N). Treatments (Rx): micronutrients (M) alone given to 20 D and 20 N ss for 16 w, with pseudo-cross over,at 8 w; 30 mg Zn + M & 30 mg Fe + M, each for 8 w, with cross over at 8 w. Outcomes: change in cognition after Rx, relation of cognition to Fe & Zn status, exchangeable Zn pod (EZP), Zn turnover rate (TR), lean body mass (LBM), and some indices of metabolism. :results: mean plus or minus SD serum ferritin = 24 plus or minus 17 ng/ml in 53 ss; plasma (p) Zn = 618 plus and minus 236.7mug/L In 50 ss; non-extracted (non-X) pi provides more reliable 67/68Zn data; in 22 ss non-X, p Zn disappearance constant (K) is 0.0199 plus and minus 0.0021 min; 24 h EZP is 151.8 plus and minus 33.0 mg; EZP/BMl is 6.6 plus and minus 1.1 mg/kg/m2; 24 h EZP by isotope dilution & kinetics are similar (r=0.994); EZP correlates with TR & LBM (r = 0.83 & 0.81). Measurements of Rx effects on cognition continue.
