A Survey of Immersive Technology For Maintenance Evaluations
Abstract
Virtual reality has come a long way since the turn of the decade and is continually growing, with extensive research by commercial, government, and educational agencies. This paper describes current virtual reality technologies available; undergoing virtual reality research & development; and issues related to those technologies that can be applied to simulated maintenance evaluations. There are still hardware and software issues that need to be overcome before virtual presence is truly felt. These issues include simulator sickness where the inner ear cannot feel the translation motion unless it is physically experienced; and multi-person tasks where peripheral vision plays a major role in the accomplishment of the task and knowing the location of the other person.
