Automating Maintenance Instructions Study
Abstract
This report describes some methods underlying automation of maintenance instructions of the sort found in maintenance technical orders. The key problem under review here is the interface between the geometry of the device and the verbal description of the maintenance actions required for the human maintainer. Language generation underlies both the simulation of a maintenance procedure and its documentation in a technical order (or instruction). Coordination between language generation and task simulation is provided by a method called parameterized action representation. Examples of computational approaches to this automation approach are provided, and recommendations for research to extend and refine the techniques are provided.
